Thumb Wrestling Sparks New Levels of Human Interaction

It’s true. I am the self-declared thumb wrestling champion. I have used it with family as absolute leverage when I needed to one-up someone. And on stage during a talent show back in 2011 (work-related design camp), if it weren’t for sweaty thumbs resulting in a tie, I certainly would have won (what would you expect me to say as a  self-declared champion!)

However, I just learned from Jane McGonical that I can go for Grandmaster or Legendary Grandmaster status. Oh yeah, this is now a new ice breaker at EVERY workshop I facilitate.

More importantly, Jane talks about several emotions that this game ignites, and how it can help us to reach a new level of human interaction. More specifically, she referred to the idea of holding hands for 6 seconds, and that we release the hormone Oxytocin. Sound familiar moms? It’s not only for inducing labor, it’s for bonding with co-workers and feeling trust and “love”.

Perfect workshop material, if I do say so myself. Ten emotions you can expect to feel, according to Jane:

1. Creativity

2. Contentment

3. Awe & Wonder

4. Excitement

5. Curiosity

6. Pride

7. Surprise

8. Love

9. Relief

10. Joy
